GENERAL

Q: My handheld came with an image viewer, why do I need AcidImage?
A: AcidImage is a full featured, robust image viewer with many features not found in other image viewers.

Q: What is the difference between AI Basic, AcidImage and AcidImage Pro?
A: AcidImage Basic is a JPEG only image viewer and slideshow application. AI Basic supports JPEG and progressive JPEG image file formats.

AcidImage (standard version) is a complete image viewing solution for sending, receiving and managing images. AcidImage supports JPEG, progressive JPEG, GIF and BMP file formats.

AcidImage Pro adds TIFF/FAX viewing capability so that you can view TIFF or fax email attachments directly on your handheld. AI Pro supports JPEG, progressive JPEG, GIF, BMP and TIFF file formats.

Q: Why do I need AcidImage Pro?
A: Third party applications, such as AcidImage Pro, are necessary to view various types of email file attachments. Your email client may not support all the different types of file attachments. If you receive faxes via email in TIFF format, you need AcidImage Pro to view your fax documents on your handheld or smartphone. With AcidImage Pro you can also view JPEG, GIF and BMP files.

Q: How do I view multi-page fax documents with AcidImage Pro?
A: Simply press the page up/ page down button (down/ up on a 5-way navigator) to view your multi-page fax. If you are viewing a large file, it may take a moment or two to display the next page.

Q: I would like to be able to view fax TIFF files on my Treo (when I am away from my desktop). Can AcidImage Pro do this?
A: Yes, AcidImage Pro can be used to view TIFF files. Tap on the file that you would like to view and AcidImage Pro will display the TIFF/ Fax document. If this does not happen automatically, make sure that AcidImage Pro is the default image viewer for TIFF files. This setting can be found by tapping the menu icon and selecting the "Options" menu at the top of the screen and then selecting "Receive Types..." The TIFF/ Fax option should be checked.

More information on using AcidImage Pro with the Treo 600 is available here.

Q: Can I use eFax service to view faxes on my Palm OS handheld?
A: Yes, you can use AcidImage Pro to view faxes on your Palm OS handheld. Visit our tutorial page with instructions for using efax on your Palm.

Q: How do I view email image file attachments?
A. You can use AcidImage to view image file attachments received via your wireless email.

If you tap on the filename and AI Pro does not launch automatically, you may need to set your image viewer application preference within your email application.

  1. Tap on the attachment icon next to the filename to access a pop-up menu.
  2. From the pop-up menu select "Select viewer"
  3. From the "Select viewer" dialog box, select the viewer you would like to use: AI Pro
  4. Tap "Done"
  5. Next, tap the name of the attachment to view it using AI Pro.
Going forward, your email application should remember this preference and automatically launch AI Pro when you tap on the attachment filename.

Q: Will AI Pro launch automatically with VersaMail?
A. VersaMail users can set AI Pro as the default VersaMail viewer for TIF image files by tapping on the yellow icon in VersaMail.

  1. Tap the yellow icon to the left of the TIF attachment.
    A pop-up menu will appear:
    View
    Select Viewer...
    Save to Card...
  2. Tap on Select Viewer...
    A dialog box will open:
    "Select Viewer"
    Type: TIF
Viewer: (drop-down selector) Photo/Video, Media, AI Pro
    (Done) (View)
  3. Most likely "Photo/Video" will be selected. Select "AI Pro" from the drop-down selector. Tap (Done)
  4. AI Pro is now set as the default for VersaMail. Now, tap the file name of the attachment and AI Pro should launch.

Note: Tapping the yellow icon and "View" will then also default to AI Pro.

If AI Pro does not start, go through steps 1 and 2 above. Be sure to tap "Done" in step 2, not "View". Tapping "Done" in step 2 sets AI Pro as the default VersaMail viewer for TIF. If you use AI Pro to view other file types, you may need to do steps 1 and 2 for those file types as well.

Q: How do I delete or rename images, or make groups?
A. Many functions in AcidImage are in the tap-and-hold menu. When you tap on the name of an image, or on a thumbnail, hold the stylus in place for about 2 seconds and a menu will pop up with a list of functions like Rename, Delete, Add To Group, etc. A green tap-and-hold indicator appears when the tap-and-hold menu is available. Hold the stylus in place until the indicator fills in, and the tap-and-hold menu will appear.

Q: How do I change settings, preferences, etc. in AcidImage?
A: Tap the "AcidImage" title bar in the upper-left hand corner of any AcidImage screen, and a menu will drop down with all sorts of options.

Q: What wireless email software is compatible with AcidImage?
A. AcidImage is compatible with all wireless email software that supports Palm Exchange Manager. For more information and a list of email applications, refer
to
Email Attachments 101: Getting started with wireless email and AcidImage

Q: Can I use AcidImage Pro to open attachments received using GoodLink software?
A. Yes, you can open and view email attachments received using GoodLink software. Make sure you have the latest release GoodLink version 3.0 or higher.

Q. Can I use AcidImage Pro to open attachments received using the Sprint PCS Business Connection software?
A. In order for AcidImage Pro to open attachments received through wireless e-mail, it requires that the e-mail program send the attachment to the Palm OS Exchange Manager on the handheld. At this time the Sprint PCS Business Connection software does not utilize the Exchange Manager which is built into the Palm OS. For this reason, AcidImage Pro is unable to open attachments received using the Business Connection software.

Q: What is Hardware JPEG Decompression? How fast is it?
A: On some Sony CLIEs like the NR70, NR70V, and T665C, hardware acceleration of JPEG decompression is possible. On devices using Palm OS 5, ARM-accelerated decompression is used. AcidImage will detect and use fast JPEG decompression when it is possible. Make sure your JPEGS are saved in "baseline" format, and not "progressive" format. Progressive JPEGs load more slowly.

Q: What is the best image size for fast loading JPEGs?
A: If you don't plan on zooming in to see details of an image, you might want to edit them down to match the screen resolution of your handheld. For older handhelds, 160x160 pixels is enough to fill the screen. For new handhelds with high resolution screens, you'll want 320x320 or 320x480 pixels.

Some JPEG editing software allows you to select a "quality" setting for saved JPEGs. You can save JPEGs with a very low quality setting and still get very good results on your handheld screen. Usually, the lower the quality setting, the faster the JPEG will load. And finally, progressive JPEGs take more memory and time to open than normal JPEGs, so if you have the option, don't save JPEGs in Progressive mode.

Q: What does the "Load JPEGs Full Size" option do?
A: When checked, this option will make AcidImage load JPEG images at their full resolution. If unchecked, AcidImage will load JPEGs at a scaled down size close to the size of the screen. Loading at a smaller size is faster, but check this option if you want to be able to zoom in to see the full detail of the image.

Q: Is there a fast way to view images from my digital camera?
A: Most Sony digital cameras have an "email" mode that can be switched on. When this is turned on, the camera will save the full resolution image, and it will also save a low resolution version of the image at the same time. These smaller images will load very quickly in AcidImage. The larger images will still be available if you want to view the full details.

Q: Does AcidImage support all screen resolutions and formats?
A: AcidImage is regularly updated to support all screen resolutions and formats. AcidImage will fully use the entire screen.

Q: How do I know how much memory it takes to load an image?
A: You can get a rough estimate of the memory required by multiplying the image width by image height. If the image is 16-bit color, such as a JPEG, a 24-bit BMP, or a 16-bit PictureGear Pocket image, you need to also multiply by two, since each pixel will use two bytes. There is also some extra overhead for decompressing the image. For example, to load a 1024x768 JPEG, a rough estimate of the free memory required is (1024 * 768 * 2), or about 1.5 Megabytes.
